The contemporary classroom has become increasingly digitized, with recent advances in the area of artificial intelligence (AI), which is beginning to take over repetitive tasks in classrooms, such as continuous student assessment or grading, and is optimizing course work and revolutionizing the way both teachers teach and students learn. Machine Learning is a branch of AI that, in simple terms, can be defined as a field of computing that uses statistical techniques to give computer systems the ability to “learn.” Allowing the machine to learn from examples and experiences, machine learning has undergone rapid development in recent years, beginning to have a presence in the educational field. Machine learning in education can be used, among other purposes, to obtain personalized information about each student’s educational experience, that could be used as a tool for teachers and administrators to help them make automatic decisions based on data. A key benefit of machine learning models is that they are able to detect patterns in large data sets that frustrate human efforts, which allows in particular to control atypical behaviors, have an early detection of school failure, or group students together or with teachers.
Educational and technological innovation go through quality digitization and the improvement of teaching and learning for an improvement of the personal, professional, and social development of students and teachers and therefore of families and society. Online behavior has been shown to have a high correlation with a student’s grade in a subject. The level of student engagement in learning activities can be considered an important indicator of teaching quality, as it signals student engagement in deep processing of learning content and reveals the time spent on homework they provide teachers for student learning.
